HM Submarine E5 was part of the 8th Flotilla patrolling the North Sea frtom their base at Harwich. Arthur Crane died on 24th February 1916 but there are conflicting reports concerning his death. According to the Graves Registration Documents of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, he was accidentally drowned whereas the Royal Naval & Naval History.net records that he died from an unspecified illness. A month later on 7th March, 1916 HM Submarine E5 sank after hitting a German mine. |
